Timothy Truman at Baltimore Comic-Con

Posted at 04:03 AM | Comments (0) | TrackBack (0)

Tim writes: "The show is this weekend, Sept. 17-18. I will be there on Saturday the 17th (not sure about Sunday). Steve Becker-- the talented artist who worked with me on inks for 'GrimJack: Killer Instinct'-- will be with me. We will have a table in the main hall. I'll be bringing a lot of original artwork from GrimJack, plus advance preview material for my Conan project that I'm doing with my Jonah Hex cohort, Joe R. Lansdale. Steve will be bringing a portfolio full of fantastic stuff-- wait 'til you see his work.

"I must say in all honesty that of all the conventions I've attended in the past year, last year's Baltimore Con was my favorite! Great people, great vibe, and a beautiful, easy-to-find location.

"SEE YOU THERE!" -TT

As you may know, due to a production slip-up two pages were inadvertently left out of The Legend of GrimJack Volume Three -- pages 12 and 13 from issue 12, to be specific. IDW Publishing is busy working out a cure; until then, we offer you the two missing pages here for your reading pleasure. When we hear from IDW about the resolution to this situation, we'll post the news here. Stay tuned.

Special thanks to Andrew W. Laubacher, John Koenigsbeck, and everybody else who pointed out the error to us.

Posted at 07:03 PM | TrackBack (0)

TheFourthRail.com - Snap Judgments: "You know, despite having read every issue published of Grimjack, I just never get tired of him kicking the crap out of a bunch of monsters. This issue sees Gaunt and his new protege/lover/possible trouble ahead Jo Chaney facing off with monstrous vampires in a vampire club, which sounds potentially kind of old hat but isn't thanks to the perfect execution by Ostrander and Truman..."

Reminder: Ostrander, Grell to appear at Chicago Comic Fest

Posted at 06:49 PM | TrackBack (0)

As previously reported here, John Ostrander, Mike Grell, and Mike Gold will be "returning to where it all started" guests at the Chicago Comic Fest, Ramada Plaza Hotel O'Hare, Rosemont, IL near O'Hare (hence the name of the hotel), March 12-13, 2005.

With the return of Ostrander and Timothy Truman's GrimJack and Grell's Jon Sable Freelance, both edited by Gold, it made sense for them to return to the old stomping grounds of First Comics, the original publisher of those series in the 80s.

NOTE: Contrary to published reports elsewhere, Timothy Truman will not be in attendance at the convention.

GRIMJACK ARTIST TRUMAN LAUNCHES NEW ART SITE

Posted at 11:14 AM | TrackBack (0)

gjeyes.jpg

CYNOSURE (ADP)- The Transdimensional Police and Bureau of Criminal Thought are investigating reports that artist Timothy Truman has launched a new website, the TrumanStudio (http://www.trumanstudio.Citymax.com).

"If we find the son of a lupoo we'll shoot him down in the streets like a... a... well, like a lupoo!" frothed Minister of Police Honus Seffington (looking elegant in his chiffon greatcoat and freshly applied temporary cheek tatoos).

"There's no reason, really," his aide, Sgt. Roscoe Shumacher, continued. Roscoe took a long drag from a cheap cigarette and thumbed the safety of his Grell 110XL. "It's just what we do."

Interest in the site has been high. Reportedly, the cyberstructure is packed with art and artifacts from across the Cynoverse, including new, unseen GRIMJACK art. "Our sources say that, all told, there might be as many as four galleries full of artwork in the joint" said Sgt. Schumacher. "The sick, perverted bastard. It's enough to make ya puke."

Despite repeated telepathic requests for a comment, officials from the Bureau of Criminal Thought remain silent on the matter-- lending credence to belief that the mysterious agency might somehow be involved with the site.

Tom the Dog's You Know What I Like?: COMICS

Tom The Dog writes: "WOOHOOOO!!! John Gaunt is back. I loved seeing all three of them back in action -- Gaunt along with creators John Ostrander and Timothy Truman.... And then there's the sheer density of the plot. The Arena, Dancer's Rebellion, Roscoe, MacCabre, the Trans-Dimensional Police, BlacJacMac, Mayfair, Cadre, the Demon Wars, Sphinx, Crayne, and of course the city of Cynosure itself -- you don't need to have a working knowledge of all those characters and events to get full enjoyment out of this issue, but it certainly helps.... Well, I do have full knowledge of it all. And I loved this issue. Great, hard-boiled writing from Ostrander, featuring typical John Gaunt tunnel vision getting his friends hurt (so that's how Roscoe lost his eye!), and beautiful Truman art, featuring his usual crazily inventive characters and fashions (ah, lizard-men with starburst makeup/tattoos around your eyes! How I've missed you!)... I can't go back to a world without Grimjack. I won't!!"

Mike Sterling's Progressive Ruin

Grimjack: Killer Instinct #1 - argh, that $3.99 price point! That's okay, though, as it's a pleasure and a half to finally get Grimjack back on the stands again. While I'm anxious to see the story pick up from where it left off at the end of the First Comics' run all those years ago, I realize that's probably not the best place to start up a new GJ series. However, this "prequel" series is a lot of fun, and beautifully drawn by Tim Truman.

Snap Judgements gives GJ:KI #1 10 out of 10 and Best of the Week!

TheFourthRail.com - Snap Judgments

Randy Lander writes, "I hadn't realized how much I had missed John Gaunt until I started paging through this return to form by his original creators, John Ostrander and Tim Truman. I was a little nervous... Ostrander had lost none of his steam in recent years, and Truman had actually gotten better with each new project, but still... how many creators have we seen trying to return to the site of old glories only to make us think maybe those old glories were, uh, not quite so glorious? I needn't have worried. Not only is GrimJack: Killer Instinct every bit as good as the older GrimJack stories, a return to form for the character and his creators, but it walks that exceptionally difficult line between being a project to welcome back the readers who have been pining for a return and remaining accessible to those who have at best only heard the name GrimJack bantered around as "one of those great series someone should bring back someday." Someday is today, someone is IDW and great still describes GrimJack."

Fight to free Holy Grail of comic properties succeeds

Posted at 05:40 PM | TrackBack (0)

GrimJack, one of the best selling and most desired original comic book characters in the history of independent comic book publishing, is about to be loosed upon an unsuspecting world once again.

The creation of John Ostrander and Timothy Truman, GrimJack was originally published in 1983 by First Comics, Inc. as a back-up story in Mike Grell’s long running hit series STARSLAYER. A true overnight sensation, First Comics promptly moved GrimJack into its own stand-alone monthly title. GrimJack was published in more than 80 original comic book issues, an original graphic novel, and three spin-off series.

After the demise and, ultimately, the highly contentious bankruptcy of First Comics’ public parent/owner, all rights to the GrimJack property became tied up in a knot of legal complexities. Ken F. Levin, one of the country’s leading developers and producers of comic art properties for movies, television, publishing and video games, immediately undertook a crusade to free the rights. Levin, a co-founder of First Comics, and his fellow First Comics co-founder Mike Gold, GrimJack’s longtime original editor, then began an odyssey of blind alleys and intense negotiations. Their efforts have finally resulted in the resolution of all rights issues and the formation of a new company, The NightSky GrimJack Rights and Production Vehicle (Four Wheel Drive Model), LLC. GrimJack creators John Ostrander and Timothy Truman have substantial equity positions in the new venture.

In an interview Mr. Levin commented, "GrimJack is just flat-out cool. Period." Mr. Levin, who has been involved with a great many comics-to-movies deals, including the blockbuster Tom Hanks / Paul Newman film "The Road To Perdition" and the spring 2004 hit "Hellboy," added that "GrimJack’s stories and variety of characters are so wonderfully strong, I suspect the comics world is as thrilled as I am that these rights are finally free."

"Tim, John and I couldn”t go to a comic book convention in the past decade without being repeatedly asked about GrimJack’s return," Mr. Gold noted. "There’s this legion of GrimJack fans who have kept the spirit alive through message boards, websites and emails," Gold concluded. "And we are all enormously appreciative of their continuous support."

GrimJack’s creators are long-standing stars of the comic book field. An internationally-produced playwright ("Bloody Bess"), Mr. Ostrander’s comic book writing credits include "Batman," "X-Men," and "Superman." Mr. Truman’s comic book art credits include "The Justice League of America," "The Lone Ranger, and "Star Wars." Mr. Truman is also known worldwide for his ongoing artistic work with Grateful Dead Productions. Stated an exultant Mr. Ostrander, "The best news of all is that we have the original team committed to creating an entirely new GrimJack comic book series, and we’re also hard at work preparing repackagings of the First Comics’ books with behind-the-scenes and new material. We couldn’t be having more fun." An announcement as to a new publishing agreement is expected in the next few weeks.

Parties interested in GrimJack property rights should contact Mr. Levin at Kenneth F. Levin and Associates, 20 N. Wacker Drive, Suite 4200, Chicago IL 60606, (312) 827-9000; email KenFLevinOffice@aol.com.
